Proposal to increase capacity at Ysgol Plas Brondyffryn (Denbigh)

Why are we doing this?

Proposal to increase the capacity of Ysgol Plas Brondyffryn (Denbigh) from 116 to 220 pupils

What is Ysgol Plas Brondyffryn, and why does it need to change?

Ysgol Plas Brondyffryn is a local authority maintained co-educational special school in the town of Denbigh, for pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and associated learning difficulties from the age of 3 to 19.

The school has a nominal capacity of 116 pupils, but currently has 136 on the roll (as of September 2021) there are a number of eligible pupils on the waiting list to attend Ysgol Plas Brondyffryn, in addition to a number of pupils awaiting assessment to see if they are eligible to join the waiting list. We believe that demand for places in special schools like Ysgol Plas Brondyffryn are likely to increase over the coming years.

What are we proposing?

In brief, we are proposing to consolidate Ysgol Plas Brondyffryn onto one new site, and increase the school's capacity to accommodate up to 220 pupils.

Ysgol Plas Brondyffryn is currently set out over 4 sites as follows:

  • Pupils aged 3-11 years old attend the Primary school, sited at Ty'n y Fron
  • Pupils aged 11-19 attend the Secondary, sited at Park Street
  • Pupils aged 11-19 with more complex needs attend the site at Ty'r Ysgol
  • There is a residential site at Gerddi Glaslyn which offers boarding facilities during the week (Monday to Friday). This site is not affected by the current proposals.

Subject to funding and planning approvals, we propose to build a new site on the playing fields at Denbigh High School, which will replace the 3 school buildings currently located at Ty'n y Fron, Park Street and Ty'r Ysgol.
