Consultation on the provision of Play opportunities in Denbighshire

Why are we doing this?

Hello. We're consulting on the provision of play opportunities for children and young people in Denbighshire.

Every three years the Council undertakes an assessment of the play opportunities available in Denbighshire to determine that:

  • Enough play opportunities is available now and for future needs
  • That the play opportunities being provided is fit for purpose

What do we mean by play?

Welsh Government described play as: "Play encompasses children’s behaviour which is freely chosen, personally directed and intrinsically motivated

  • Freely chosen means that children themselves choose when, how and what to play. Play is not part of a set programme and does not have any steps that need to be completed.
  • Personally directed means children themselves control the content of their play and they decide the rules and roles they take when playing.
  • Intrinsically motivated means that play is undertaken for its own sake, and not performed for any reward, certificate or status. Play is the process that children are involved in rather than the end product.

Play transcends age, ability, ethnicity, social standing, religion and gender. It can take many different forms and it has many different characteristics. It is this scope and potential in play that makes it inclusive to all children and young people.

What do we mean by 'play provision'?

Play provision means safe spaces and any equipment used to facilitate play. Included are things like:

  • Outdoor playgrounds and recreational spaces
  • Play centres and youth clubs

Not included are things like:

  • Clubs or organised groups which meet to perform tasks which are directed by adults such as:
    • Sports clubs where directed by adults
    • Arts / music clubs or classes where directed by adults

What the assessment found:

In summary, the key findings of the assessment were:

  1. There is a lack of play opportunities for children with additional needs and disabilities.
  2. Consultation suggests that children have a lack of play opportunities outside of school.
  3. Play is too easily ignored when faced with budget pressures and more pressing agenda items.
