Hackney Carriage Fare Review 2022 – Public Consultation

The Council is proposing a new revised table of fares for Hackney Carriages licensed by the Council. The Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976 provides that in respect of the charges for Hackney Carriages, the Council “may fix the rates or fares within the district as well for time as distance, and all other charges in connection with the hire of a vehicle…by means of a table.”

The proposed changes are following a recommendation for review from the Licensing Committee in May 2022. The amended fares comprise, in summary, of:

Tariff 1: Standard Rate

Applies to hirings between 7.00am and 11.00pm

  • Rate for the first mile: £5.00
  • Rate for each mile thereafter: £2.50
  • £3.75 maximum charge up to 880 yards
  • 20p for each additional 141 yards or 25 seconds

Tariff 2: Sunday and night rate

Applies to all hirings on Sundays, and Monday to Friday between 11.00pm and 7.00am

  • Rate for first mile: £6.20
  • Rate for each mile thereafter: £3.70
  • £4.25 maximum charge up to 880 yeards
  • 30p for each additional 141 yards or 25 seconds

Tariff 3: Double daytime rate

Applied on:

  • National public holidays
  • Between 11.00pm on 24th December and 7.00am on 27th December
  • Between 11.00pm on 31st December and 7.00am on 1st January
  • Rate for first mile: £10.10
  • Rate for each mile thereafter: £5.00
  • £7.50 maximum charge up to 880 yeards
  • 40p for each additional 141 yeards or 25 seconds

Extra charges:

  • For each passenger in excess of 1: 50p
  • For each animal: 50p
  • Soiling the carriage and leaving it unfit for hire: £100.00

What do we want to know?

 

If representations are received by 11 November 2022, the Council must consider those representations before presenting the revised tariff to the Licensing Committee for adoption.

In considering representation, the Council would determine a new date for when the proposed table of fares and any amendments (if applicable) would come in to effect.

Consultation

The consultation on the proposed amendments runs between 21st October 2022 and 11th November 2022. Should you wish to make representations to the proposed fares and charges taking effect, you must put your representations in one of the following ways:
