Llangollen's Four Great Highways: Initial Designs feedback
Why are we doing this?
This project aims to promote and enhance the four great highways of Llangollen, by providing landscape and engineering improvements works to enhance access, biodiversity and visibility to and interpretation of the Llangollen Canal and World Heritage Site, the former Ruabon to Barmouth railway line, the River Dee and Thomas Telford’s Historic Route: the London to Holyhead Road (A5).
The aim is to improve the resident and visitor experience and encourage people to spend more time here.
In particular the project aims to:
- Implement improvements adjacent to the Wharf including seating, access and signage
- Improved signage to the Railway
- Improved accessibility and signage to Lower Dee Mill Park
- Enhancement, repair and reimagining Lower Dee Mill Park

What do we want to know?
Following our first consultation, the Four Great Highways project team has now developed initial designs for the four areas of the project, and we would like to hear your views.
Once we have received your feedback, the team will develop the final designs for the project which will be considered by Denbighshire County Council’s Planning Department if necessary. The final designs will then be agreed, and a contractor will start the construction stage of the project.
It is important for us that you continue to be involved throughout the project, so we will ask for more feedback on any further designs we develop.
Feedback must be received by 2 April 2023.

What we found out
Most people were in support of the designs at the Wharf as an improvement to the current steps and ramp. The planting of a wildflower meadow would also be a welcomed addition to the area.
Many people explained that the current stepped access points in Lower Dee Mill Park make it quite difficult for them to visit. Most people preferred the first design option in the park, new steps and a ramp close to the bridge. However, the second option of a new ramped access further down in the park was also supported by some people.
We received concerns from both residents living close to the park and visitors regarding the installation of a dedicated barbeque area in the park. But the feedback received also showed that improvements are needed to encourage people to visit the area and stay longer, providing facilities to entertain families whilst they are there.
Everyone agreed that the heritage features, for example the timber bridge, within this project should be repaired and improved as a priority.
People were supportive of the new signage and wayfinding ideas at the Wharf, Lower Dee Mill Park and the car parks in town. Some of the favourite designs included the metal circles in the pavements and interpretation on new seating within the area. However, any new signs installed must complement the Area of Natural Beauty, using heritage materials.
What difference has it made?
The feedback received will be shared with our designers to help inform the final detailed designs for the project. These will be shared widely once they are complete over the summer months before work commences in Llangollen in the autumn.
